Prometheus

Prometheus is a small moon orbiting Saturn.[1] Measurements suggest a low-density interior, likely with voids in its icy material.[1]

History

Prometheus entered the record after Voyager 1's team spotted it in 1980.[1]

Findings

Prometheus is a shepherd moon whose gravity herds particles near the inner rim of the F ring, one of Saturn's narrow rings.[1] Some visible craters on Prometheus reach about 20 kilometres across.[1] JPL lists Prometheus at a mean radius of 43.1 kilometres.[2] ESA lists Prometheus at 68 by 148 kilometres in diameter.[3]

Current status

Prometheus orbits about 139,000 kilometres from Saturn.[1] ESA gives Prometheus an orbital period of 0.61 Earth days.[3]
